Abstract

This document presents an overview of Al Asfar National Park, located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. It highlights the ecological significance of the park’s wetland–desert interface, characterised by dune systems, hydrological features, and diverse vegetation. The content supports environmental assessment and restoration planning in one of the region’s key natural landscapes. The brochure aims to inform environmental planners, technical staff, and stakeholders working on protected area management. It reflects the collaborative efforts of FAO, NCVC, and MEWA to enhance understanding of ecological processes, conservation priorities, and the role of Al Asfar wetlands in supporting biodiversity and landscape resilience.

Description

The publication provides a visual and technical introduction to Al Asfar National Park, combining photographic material with geospatial insights. It emphasises the interaction between wetlands and surrounding sandy ecosystems, illustrating the dynamics of vegetation patterns, water bodies, and dune morphology. The brochure is intended as a reference tool for restoration initiatives, conservation planning, and environmental monitoring in arid-zone protected areas. The document aligns with national environmental objectives and FAO’s technical support programme in Saudi Arabia, contributing to improved management and protection of unique wetland systems in the Eastern Province.
